Poms have a double coat with a straight outer coat and soft undercoat. It protects the breed from rain and snow, yet they are recommended for indoor living. A compact body build, small eyes and ears, and a bushy tail that is carried over the back characterize the breed.

Poms are the smallest member of the Spitz family and have close ties with the Keeshond, Norwegian elkhound, and others. Although unbelievable, earlier in time they were used for pulling sleighs and did well enabled by their large size (20-30 pounds) and ability to live in harsh weather conditions.
